Frameless kitchen cabinets are built without the face or front frame, which is the first layer of cabinetry that secures the cabinet doors. These face or front frames are composed of vertical rails and horizontal stiles, which are not present in frameless cabinets. This lack of rails and stiles make the inside of frameless cabinets more accessible.

Frameless cabinets have been popular with European cabinet makers for years. They are sometimes referred to as "box carcasses" with no front frame or "full-access kitchen cabinets," among other names.

Framed vs. frameless cabinets

Framed cabinets have the face frame composed of stiles and rails, while frameless cabinets do not. Eliminating these stiles and rails makes it easier for placement of dishes and dry goods, as well as improving accessibility when the cabinet doors are open.

In those earlier eras, kitchen cabinetry was usually custom-built, often on site. This meant a cabinet maker essentially built a set of shelves on a wall and then face-framed them. The technique did not lend easily to mass production.

What are frameless kitchen cabinets known for?

Some general contractors specializing in cabinetry point out Ikea sought to drive cabinet costs down by mass-producing units and eliminating the front frame. Door hinges could attach to the inside of the cabinet, allowing for full access to the interior.

These full-access, frameless cabinets are known for their ease of production, installation, and use. Busy kitchen wizards can use and have access to every inch of a cabinet’s interior, from wide cookie sheets to dozens of spice bottles.

Are there frameless kitchen cabinet standards?

The Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA) recommends that homeowners find the KCMA Seal, found inside the sink base cabinet door, to know the cabinet was made to the association’s high standards.

This Seal has a code at the bottom to identify the manufacturer of the cabinets. Also look for KCMA’s Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP) Seal, which demonstrates the cabinet maker used eco-friendly practices.
