What Is a Built-In Refrigerator?

Refrigerators marketed as "built-in" typically have a basic cabinet depth between 23 and 27 inches, though actual depths vary by manufacturer. For example, you may see models with depths of 28 inches (LG and Samsung), 30 inches (GE), or 27 inches (Whirlpool) – all promoted as built-in units. Despite the name, most built-in refrigerators still protrude one to two inches beyond the cabinetry once the doors are installed.

There is also a second category: fully integrated (or panel‑ready) refrigerators. These models allow custom cabinet panels to be mounted directly onto the doors, making the appliance completely disappear into the surrounding cabinetry. Only a minimal gap of approximately ⅛ inch remains around the perimeter.

Why Choose a Built-In Refrigerator?

Cabinet Design Considerations

When designing cabinetry around a built-in refrigerator, several key details require attention:

Ventilation Clearance – This is the most critical consideration. Most refrigerators require 1 inch of ventilation clearance on both sides and 2–3 inches at the top for heat dissipation. Ignoring these specifications can shorten compressor life or trigger thermal overload protection. For fully integrated models, manufacturers typically specify a minimum side clearance of ⅛ to 1 inch, and 1 to 2 inches at the top and rear.

Watch the Backsplash – A raised backsplash reduces the overall countertop depth. If no backsplash is planned, additional depth may be needed when selecting the refrigerator. For example, if cement board backing and thick tiles are installed between the countertop and the bottom of the wall cabinets, countertop depth may be reduced by as much as one inch.

Depth Calculation – Standard cabinet depth is 600 mm (approximately 24 inches). However, industry best practice recommends a refrigerator body depth of ≤594 mm to accommodate three unavoidable tolerances: wall verticality deviation (3 mm), compressor resonance clearance (2 mm), and cabinet panel machining error (1 mm). This 6 mm allowance prevents the refrigerator from protruding beyond the cabinet face.

Door Swing Clearance – If the refrigerator is placed against a wall or fixed cabinet panel, the hinge and door thickness require some clearance to fully open. Without this space, the door will not open beyond 90°, severely limiting access.

Understanding Capacity – Built‑in refrigerator capacities range from 15 to 25 cubic feet. While integrated models save space, some food storage capacity is sacrificed. Although additional width and height can compensate for some of that loss, most built‑in models offer slightly less capacity than their standard counterparts of similar dimensions.

Ventilation: The Make-or-Break Detail

Many built‑in refrigerator projects fail precisely because of poor ventilation design.

Front‑bottom ventilation is the key to achieving a "zero‑clearance" installation. Heat is exhausted from the front bottom of the unit, so large gaps on the sides and rear are unnecessary. With front‑bottom ventilation, side clearance can be as small as 4 mm – just enough for the hinges to swing.

By contrast, traditional side‑ventilated refrigerators require 5–10 cm of clearance on each side – effectively turning a 600 mm refrigerator into an 800 mm refrigerator. This design is not recommended for true built‑in installations.

How to tell: Look for a ventilation grille at the front bottom of the refrigerator. If it doesn't have front‑bottom ventilation but still claims "zero‑clearance" installation, that's likely a marketing claim – not engineering reality.
