An insight into the laminate finish

On contrary to the acrylic finished cabinets, cabinets with laminate finish comprise of artificial(synthetic) materials that are made by pressing thin layers of flat paper and substitute resins together, creating laminate sheets of various dimensions. These sheets are then pressed on to the carcass material by using automated machinery under pressure. Once the sheets are pasted, the outer layer is then printed with various decorative patterns, textures, or solid colors. The laminate sheets come in different varieties that are differentiated by their appearance and quality.

By quality, we mean the pressure used to press the laminate and the type of carcass material. While high-pressure laminates are pasted on plywood whereas low-pressure laminates are layered onto medium density fibreboard (MDF), or particle board.

Types of laminate finish

Laminates have always been a favorite of cabinetry designers due to its range of choices. Following are the types of laminate finishes that you can opt for.

1. Matte laminate:

If you cannot find the perfect matte shade for your cabinets in melamine, the matte laminate finish is an apt replacement to go for. These matte laminates have excellent towards scratches and dust that ensures easy maintenance of the cabinets. As per the cabinetry designers, go for 1mm thick sheets for the external surface to ensure a graceful look.

2. Gloss laminate:

While the acrylic finish is known for its gloss look, the cost of these cabinets are on a higher side. Gloss laminate is a budget-friendly replacement to acrylic finish. It gives out a mirror-like sheen to the cabinets, making your space look brighter and vibrant.

Tip: If you are confused between matte laminate & gloss laminate, you can go for a combination of both. Either you choose matte for upper cabinets and gloss finish for the base cabinets or vice-versa.

3. Solid-colored laminate:

If you are more into colors, the solid-colored laminate finish will give you all, right from the pops of yellow to the smart greys. These bring in a defined and cleaner look to the cabinets. You have an option of selecting either a single solid color or go for combinations of two.

4. Textured laminate:

Bored with your monochrome cabinets? Then, add some texture and a feeling of depth to them with the textured laminate finish. These are available in different color shades and patterns that simulate the elements of solid wood or a wood grain texture. As suggested by the experts, the thicker the laminate surface is, the more scratch resistant it will be.

Benefits of choosing laminate finish

1. One of the foremost reasons for choosing laminate finish is its competitive price. Laminates come in a moderate range and act as a great alternative to the high-end finishes.

2. Laminate finished cabinets have a hard wearing base. Since it is manufactured under pressure, it has excellent resistance to scratch and can withstand moisture to a considerable amount.

3. Maintaining your cabinets is a tedious task and when they are difficult to maintain, it adds more to the task. Laminate cabinets save you from this nightmare as they are pretty easy to maintain.
