While E1 has long been considered safe for panel, E0 has emerged as a "better" label. Now, a new standard is quietly but firmly becoming the benchmark for indoor-air-quality-conscious buyers: ENF.

If you follow global material trends, you'll notice that more and more architects, hotel developers, and high-end residential builders are actively specifying ENF-certified panels – not just in China, but also in Europe, North America, and the Middle East.

What Exactly Is the ENF Standard?

ENF is the highest emission class under the Chinese national standard GB/T 39600‑2021. The abbreviation stands for "Extra‑low No‑Formaldehyde added." Its formaldehyde emission limit is ≤0.025 mg/m³ – roughly one‑fifth of the E1 limit and about half of the US CARB P2 limit (0.05 ppm ≈ 0.0625 mg/m³).

But the real difference is not just the numbers. ENF requires zero use of formaldehyde‑based adhesives. Manufacturers must use MDI (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate), soy‑based, or other zero‑formaldehyde binders. This changes the entire production process – and fundamentally changes the formaldehyde emission profile of the finished panel.

ENF Is Becoming a Global Reference Standard

1. Global projects are adopting it voluntarily

International hotel groups, international schools, and healthcare facilities are increasingly specifying ENF directly in their project requirements. Why? Because they want to genuinely take responsibility for the health of their occupants and users.

2. Third‑party testing and transparent traceability

The official ENF standard uses the same test method as E1 (the 1m³ climate chamber method), making the results directly comparable. Reputable manufacturers must provide third‑party test reports (e.g., from SGS, TÜV, or BV). This transparency and traceability make it easier for overseas buyers to verify compliance and builds trust.

3. The cost gap is shrinking

In the past, no‑formaldehyde‑added panels cost more than 50% above ordinary E1 panels. But with large‑scale adoption of MDI adhesives and improved production efficiency, the premium for ENF panels has dropped to 20‑30%. For high‑end projects or health‑sensitive applications (kindergartens, hospitals), this extra cost is entirely acceptable.

Rebon's Recommendation

We do not recommend ENF for every project, because:

  • Different markets have different legal requirements: Exports to the US must meet CARB P2; exports to Europe must meet E1. ENF is an added advantage, but it cannot replace mandatory certifications.

  • Budget‑first projects: E0 or CARB P2 already provide very good environmental performance at lower cost.
  • Usage environment determines the grade: For bedrooms, children's rooms, senior care projects, or enclosed spaces – ENF is recommended. For living rooms or storage rooms, E0 or E1 is sufficient.
