Does your kitchen cabinet door look crooked? Maybe it's sagging a little, or it doesn't close quite right.
Don't call a handyman just yet. And don't worry – your hinges aren't broken.
Most cabinet doors just need a quick adjustment. With a screwdriver and five minutes, you can fix the problem yourself.

What You'll Need
- Phillips or flathead screwdriver (depending on your hinges)
- A few minutes of patience
- (Optional) a helper to hold the door for height adjustments
✅ Most modern cabinet hinges (like Blum, Hettich, or Hafele) have three built‑in adjustment screws. You don't need to remove the door.
Three Adjustments You Can Make
Most hinges allow adjustment in three directions: side/tilt, height, and front/back.
Here's how each one works.
Use this when the door is too close to or too far from the cabinet frame.
| Turn screw | Effect |
| Clockwise (↻) | Moves the door away from the cabinet side |
| Counterclockwise (↺) | Moves the door closer to the cabinet side |
When you need this: The gap between the door and the frame is uneven, or the door rubs against the frame.

Use this when the door is too high or too low – for example, the top edge doesn't line up with the cabinet above.
Important: Support the weight of the door with one hand while turning the screw.
| Turn screw | Effect |
| Clockwise (↻) | Moves the door up |
| Counterclockwise (↺) | Moves the door down |
When you need this: The door corners don't align with neighboring doors or the cabinet frame.

Use this when the door doesn't close completely or sticks out at the bottom.
| Turn screw | Effect |
| Clockwise (↻) | Reduces the gap – pulls the door closer to the cabinet body |
| Counterclockwise (↺) | Increases the gap – pushes the door further from the cabinet body |

Quick Troubleshooting Table
| Problem | Most Likely Adjustment |
| Door rubs against the frame | Side / Tilt |
| Top corner is lower than the cabinet above | Height |
| Door doesn't close fully or pops open | Front / Back |
| Gaps are uneven side to side | Side / Tilt |
| Door sags over time | Height (lift it up) |
Final Test
After each adjustment:
- Close the door slowly – it should align evenly with the frame and neighboring doors.
- Open and close it a few times – movement should be smooth, with no rubbing or resistance.
- Check the gap – it should be uniform (about 2–3mm) around the door.
If the door still isn't right, repeat the steps. Sometimes it takes two or three small tweaks to get perfect alignment.
Still Having Trouble?
Sometimes a door has been out of alignment for so long that the hinges themselves need a deeper look. Or maybe the cabinet frame has shifted.
