Wood-based panel type furniture is a kind of furniture made of MDF or particle board. Because it is easy to disassemble, has various designs, is not easily deformed, is affordable, and is more suitable for mass production, it has now covered most households.

There are three major factors that determine the quality of panel-type furniture: base material, finish and edge banding. However, when buying furniture, edge banding is often not taken seriously. In fact, the quality of edge banding greatly affects the quality of panel type furniture.

Is Edge Banding Necessary?

1

Decorate

The first function of edge banding is of course its decorative function, which enhances the aesthetic appearance of the furniture. The panel-type furniture without edge banding has a rough section and is easy to hide dirt, and furniture after edge banding is easy to clean.

2

Reinforce

Edge banding can effectively improve the stability and firmness of the panel, make the board not easy to open and crack. At the same time, edge banding can well protect the edge of the panel and prevent the panel from being damaged due to bumping or abrasion.

3

Moisture Proof

The better the edge banding technology, the better the moisture-proof effect. Especially in areas with high humidity (such as coastal cities), the specific environment will have a huge impact on the quality of the furniture. Edge banding can effectively block the impact of the environment on the panel, thereby avoiding mold, cracking and deformation of the panel due to moisture factors, and improving the service life of the panel-type furniture.

4

Health

The volatile harmful substances (such as formaldehyde, TVOC, etc.) in furniture have a significant impact on human health and safety. Edge banding can effectively limit the release of harmful substances from panels in furniture.

When buying panel-type furniture, how to judge the quality of the edge banding?

1. Check whether the color or texture of the strip is consistent with the panel finish.

2. Check the joint between the strip and the panel. The obvious glue line or too large gap will affect the aesthetics of the furniture.

3. Check whether the surface of the edge banding strip is smooth and flat, with or without warping and bubbling. The edge banding is uneven, easy to get wet, and the strip is easy to fall off after a long time of use.

4. Use fingernails or other tools to scratch the strip. If there is damage and depression, the wear resistance and hardness of the strip cannot meet the standard, which proves the edge banding is unqualified.
